Wellington Yueh is a character in the 2021 film Dune. He is the doctor of House Atreides. Wellington Yueh is portrayed by Chang Chen.

Character description[]

As the trusted House physician for the Atreides royal family, Dr. Yueh uses intricate pressure point manipulation to detect injuries, sense sickness, and even intuit the psychological state of his patients simply by touching them. More than just a doctor, he values human life above all things and is part of the Atreides closest inner circle, having long watched over their wellbeing with the same care he affords his own family.[1]

History[]

Warning Paul[]

When Paul is forced to come before the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, Yueh gives him a quick physical examination before he sees her. He warns Paul to be weary of her given that the Bene Gesserit may be wise, but they also have their own agendas and will manipulate to meet them.

Betrayal of House Atreides[]

After an attempt is made on Paul's life when House Atreides arrives on Arrakis, soldiers within the walls of Arrakeen are put onto high alert and Leto ensures that Paul is protected at all times. Only days later, however, it is revealed that Yueh was responsible for the attack and has betrayed House Atreides when he blocks their communications and lowers the shield wall protecting Arrakeen, leaving the Atreides' open to attack from the Harkonnen's and Sardaukar.

Yueh comes face-to-face with Leto when he paralyses him with a dart. He explains that he has betrayed the house in an attempt to save his wife, whom has been kidnapped by the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Yueh replaces one of Leto's teeth, however, with a poison implant and tells him to bite down when he is in the vicinity of the Baron. Doing so will emit a poison that will kill the Baron, but consequently Leto too.

Death[]

Bringing Leto before the Baron earns Yueh great respect, but also great shame given he betrayed those he was loyal to. Yueh is surprised, however, when the Baron laughs at him and chides him, decapitating him moments later and remarking that he promised to reunite him with his wife, even if this happened to be in death.

Physical appearance[]

Personality[]

Whilst Yueh seemed to respect House Atreides and be loyal, his personality was skewed to whatever suited him. Nonetheless, he did seem to have an affinity for Paul Atreides and seemed loyal to him. Yueh cared enough to warn Paul of the dangers of the Bene Gesserit, and also to provide him and Jessica with a survival kit after betraying Leto.

Yueh also seemed resentful of betraying Leto, but felt that his wife was more important to him than that of the Atreides.

Differences from the original character[]

Wellington Yueh is adapted from the character of the same name from the original Dune novel.
