Victor Atreides was the first son of Duke Leto Atreides I, half brother to Paul Atreides. Victor Atreides was mothered by Kailea Vernius, sister to Rhombur Vernius of Ix. He was later killed in an assasination attempt on Duke Leto set in motion by Kailea and her servant. The servant was a plant by House Harkonnen when Kailea receieved a Lady-In-Waiting from Kaitain. Over a long period of time, the servant ever so slightly planted false info and manipulated Kailea to turn against Duke Leto. The plot eventually consumed Atreides House Guard Captain Swain Goire. After a tryst with the Guard Captain, Kailea and her servant stole his keycard to the Atreides armory. When Duke Leto was on a procession over the interior lands of Caladan, Victor discovered a small explosive and accidentally triggered them. Killing Victor and severly wounding Duke Leto and Prince Rhombur of Ix.
In the aftermath, Kailea stabbed her servant with Goire's ceremonial blade, and then threw her self from a tower window in Castle Caladan. Goire went to Thufir Hawat and threw himself upon the mercy of the Duke. Leto sentenced Goire to live and never forget the pain he caused, and that he would never regain his Duke's trust. Goire's reply was "someday they will call you 'Leto the Just.'
Leto was awash in grief for his son, however, he did recover enough to lead House Atreides again. Prince Rhombur received cyborg implants from Dr. Wellington Yueh and lived on. Jessica and Duke Leto conceived Paul Atreides after this incident.
