A Defensive Shield, commonly reffered to as a shield, was a protective energy field that could surround the person who whore it. It was almost like a personal Pentashield.
A shield was produced by a Holtzman generator, the field deriving from Phase One of the suspensor-nullification effect. A shield would permit entry only to objects that moved at slow speeds. Depending on the the shield's setting, the object's speed while passing through the Shield would range from six to nine centimeters per second.
The shield could only be shorted out by a shire-sized electric field. If a Lasgun were to produce this field, the Lasgun's beam intercepting with the shield would result in explosive pyrotechnics(technically, subatomic fusion, which would destroy anything in the range of the explosion.)
