Duke Paulus Atreides, also known as The Old Duke, was the head of House Atreides and the father of Leto Atreides.

Background[]
Duke Paulus Atreides was called upon by the Padishah Emperor Elrood Corrino IX during the Ecazi Revolt to help him destroy the rebels. Once the insurrection failed, Paulus offered amnesty to any of the insurrectionists who agreed to an unconditional surrender. Many accepted this offer, but once Paulus and his forces withdrew, Elrood deployed a legion of Sardaukar, who rounded up the familiies of the rebels and burned them alive.
Paulus was later killed in a bullfight and succeeded by his son Leto.[1]

The Prisoner approached Beatriz Luna at her stall in Arrakeen, where she told them of Paulus' role in the Ecazi Revolt and his death in the bullfight.[1]
