Padishah Emperor , by

Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, by Jean Giraud

The Emperor of the Known Universe[1] was the hereditary ruler of the Imperium, from its establishment in 88 BG to the death of Emperor Leto II Atreides in 13724 AG.

The first emperor was Sheuset I Costin I Corrino,[1] a leader of the formidable Sardaukar who established the Imperium following his victory at the Battle of Corrin.[2] Barring some interruptions due to usurpations and revolutions, the position of emperor was occupied by various branches of House Corrino for more than ten millennia, until the deposition of Shaddam IV Corrino in 10196 AG.[1] The throne was thereafter occupied by House Atreides until 13724 AG.[1]

In addition to the style "Emperor of the Known Universe", the Corrino rulers of houses Hajus Corrino (7426–8008) and Hajus Elrood Corrino (8708–10196) also styled themselves as Padishah Emperor.[n 1] The last emperor, Leto II Atreides, was known by the grander title of God Emperor[3] or Summa-Emperor.[4]

Blue Glass Arrow Main article: House of Hajus Corrino

In 7425–7426, a revolt of several Houses Major against the corrupt line of the House of Irulon Corrino brought to demi-House of Hajus Corrino to the throne.[7] One of the main supporting houses of the revolt was House Atreides; in return for their support, Duchess Hippolute Atreides was made Imperial Consort. The marriage intermingled the Corrino and Atreides lines and spawned occasional rivalry between the two houses until the deposition of the Hajus Corrino line in 8008.[7]

Atreides Imperium (10196–13724)[]

Blue Glass Arrow Main article: Atreides Empire/DE

House of Atreides Arrakides (10196–13724)[]

The imperial line of House Atreides was known as the House of Atreides Arrakides[7] (after their Imperial Seat, Arrakis) and as the House of Atreides Corrino.[1]

373. Paul I Muad'Dib (10196–10209[n 9]). Took power after the Arrakis Revolt.[8] Descendant of Fredhrick I.[7] Husband of Irulan III.
374. Alia VIII (Regent, 10209–10219[n 10]). Sister of Paul I.
375. Leto II (10219–13724[n 11][n 12]). Son of Paul I.

Discrepancies with other continuities[]

The Schools of Dune and Prelude to Dune series, part of the Expanded Dune canon by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, give a vastly different account on many of the Corrino emperors:

Notes[]

  1. Conjectural. Both The Dune Encyclopedia (in entry CORRINO, SHADDAM IV) and Dune number Shaddam IV as the 81st Padishah Emperor. The Dune Encyclopedia however also lists Shaddam IV as the 370th Emperor of the Known Universe. The contradiction is resolved with the assumption that the style "Padishah Emperor" was only adopted by some Corrino rulers. In the list of emperors, the House of Hajus Corrino is also referred to as "The Padishahs", suggesting the title was first adopted in their time. Adding together the rulers of houses Hajus Corrino and Hajus Elrood Corrino in the list gives 81 rulers.
  2. Saudir I is named as "the Great" in "A CHRONOLOGY OF SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY" at the beginning of The Dune Encyclopedia. He is per "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" also considered to be "Akbar I", Akbar meaning"great".
  3. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" dates Sidir VI's first reign as ending in 1862 AG but Corrin V's second reign as beginning in 1860 AG.
  4. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" enumerates both Menemtahe III and Costin IV as the 68th emperor. Since this is clearly an error, this list enumerates Costin IV as the 69th emperor, with the numbers of all later emperors (until Faradh IV) increased by 1 (relative to "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE") as a result.
  5. 5.0 5.1 "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" lists two emperors named Ezhar VII (one in the Second House of Corrin Corinno, 5225–5307, and one in the House of Hajus Elrood Corrino, 8751–8754).
  6. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" erroneously enumerates Gamis Kenrod as "Gamis Kenrod II", despite being preceded in the list Kenrod II and being followed by Malcor Kenrod IV; his name has thus been altered here to the correct Gamis Kenrod III.
  7. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" erroneously counts Faradh IV twice, as the 243rd and 245th emperor. Since this is clearly an error, this list enumerates him as just the 244th (the numbers having been increased since a previous error with Costin IV, the 69th emperor). This means that the previously increased numbers used in this list from Costin IV onwards from here on return to the numbers used in the list in The Dune Encyclopedia.
  8. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" erroneously counts both Fredhrick II and Alia VII as the 254th ruler. The numbers from here on are therefore increased again relative to the numbers in The Dune Encyclopedia.
  9. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" dates the end of Paul's reign in 10208 AG. "A CHRONOLOGY OF SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY", in the beginning of The Dune Encyclopedia, dates Paul going into the desert in 10209 AG. Both "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" and "ATREIDES, LADY ALIA" date the start of Alia's regency in 10209.
  10. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" dates the end of Alia's regency in 10218 AG. Both "A CHRONOLOGY OF SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY", in the beginning of The Dune Encyclopedia, and "ATREIDES, LADY ALIA" dates the end of Alia's regency to 10219 AG.
  11. "EMPERORS OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE" dates the beginning of Leto II's reign in 10209 AG. "A CHRONOLOGY OF SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY", in the beginning of The Dune Encyclopedia, states that his reign only began after Alia's regency, in 10219 AG.
  12. The Dune Encyclopedia consistently dates Leto II's death to 13724 AG. This is off by four years from the timeline of the original Dune books since God Emperor of Dune states that Leto reigned for 3508 years, whereas the Encyclopedia's dates give 3504 years.
