Muad'dib was the Fremen name of the "second moon" of Arrakis, the smaller of the planet's two moons. It was named by the Zensunnis (who developed into the Fremen) after the kangaroo mouse ("muad'dib").

Behind the scenes[]

The Fremen traditions of seeing certain established symbolic shapes in the surfaces of the two moons of Arrakis is similar to the traditions of various Earth cultures, who saw certain patterns, shapes and figures in the surface of Earth's Moon. (The human habit of seeing certain images or patterns of images in unrelated things is known as pareidolia.)
