The Mongoose - Emperor: Battle for Dune
The Mongoose was a single-occupant mechanized walker designed by the House Atreides and used during the Battle for Dune. What it lacked in speed, it made up for in its firepower and small size, making it easy to overlook. The Mongoose had an anti-aircraft missile launcher on a 360 degree swivel attached to the top.[1] The vehicle had light armor, though it was remarkably resistant to damage due to the carbon-composite endo-skeleton protecting the pilot's cockpit.[2]
The Atreides High Command conceived of the Mongoose when aiming to design a mobile and light-weight vehicle without sacrificing firepower. The design period was incredibly short and was pushed out quickly, loosely inspired by the Terran animal of the same name. It was first used to supervise Atreides production plants on their homeplanet of Caladan and was later deployed on Arrakis during the Battle for Dune. The Mongoose was met with initial skepticism by the Atreides military field commanders. Stories circulated that walker designs, like the Mongoose or updated Harkonnen Devastators would slip and trip on the sand dunes of Arrakis, though these stories were alleviated when the Mongoose proved to be an extremely effective tool in the war. The Duke Achillus Atreides kept the frontlines of the Atreides military well supplied with Mongooses at all times.[2]
