Lila Cho Grace Na-Berto Anirul was the youngest acolyte at the Sisterhood School with a deep empathy beyond her years.[1]
Biography[]
Lila was training with the Sisterhood. When she heard Jen tell a lie about her parents selling her to someone who peddled the flesh of children, whom she later killed, along with parents. Lila said she knew that the story was a lie, but also knew there was truth behind it. Lila herself was raised in the Sisterhood and the Reverend Mothers didn't tell her who her parents were.[2]
As word spread that Kasha had died, Lila talked to the other acolytes about it and Theodosia suggested it was an assassination.
Tula then came to Lila and told her for the first time that Raquella was her great-great-grandmother. Then she said Lila could unlock her genetic memory to give them more insight into Raquella's prophecy, giving them guidance on what to do. Lila was reluctant as it would require being poisoned and experiencing Agony, something she hadn't trained for.
Seeking guidance, Lila talked to Emeline about being a martyr. Emenline told her that human life was sacred and giving it was the best thing they could do.
Lila then talked to Jen, who believed Lila was just being sacrificed for the Sisterhood, that they didn't care about her as an individual, but only about the Order. Lila defended that she also cared about the Order and believed in the mission.
Lila went back to Tula and said she used to pretend Tula was her mother. Tula said she pretended the same thing, which is why she gave Lila her most precious keepsake. Tula also told Lila that she's known her mother, but she had died giving birth, leading Lila to wonder if she would see her mother in her other memory. Tula said she couldn't promise Lila would see her mother and said they'd find other options if Lila decided she couldn't do it.
Lila decided to go through with it and Tula told her to listen to her voice and look for the light, which would help her get out. Then she dropped the poison into Lila's eye. This sent Lila into an empty room that soon filled with women who mobbed Lila. She was able to connect with Raquella, who told her that the key to the reckoning was one born twice: once in blood and once in spice. Tula tried to ask how they fought it, but then Lila was grabbed by another figure. She thought it was her mother, but it was Dorotea, her grandmother, who told her her mother wasn't here, that that was just something they told her to manipulate her into going through with this. Then she showed Lila the memory of Valya using The Voice to get her to kill herself and told Tula that Valya stole her life, so she'd steal her hope. Lila flopped back onto the bed and dropped her keepsake as Tula begged her to come back to her.[3]
Lila remained in her unresponsive state. Even though no one had ever recovered from the state she was in, Tula refused to let Lila go. Finally, Avila insisted. They brought the other acolytes to say goodbye to her, giving a speech about how the Sisterhood was more important that one individual and how her knowledge would be carried forward, then they turned off the machine keeping her alive. While everyone else believed she had died, Tula secretly took her down to the storeroom, where she continued keeping her alive using a thinking machine.[4]
Tula sat with Lila as she remained in her state. She told Lila that she believed she was the key to the reckoning, the one twice born. Lila woke soon after this, hugged Tula, and then asked where she was.[5]
Lila struggled with the ancestors' voices being in her head, so Tula brought Jen to come monitor her. When Lila seemed to have woken up, Jen talked to her, telling her about the acolytes' nightmares. Lila said she'd already seen what they were seeing and Jen realized it wasn't Lila, but Raquella speaking through her. When Lila finally did wake up for real, Jen told her they thought they'd gotten what they needed and applauded her bravery.[6] Lila's body was then taken over by Dorotea, who told the other Sisters the truth about her death and Valya's lies to cover it up. Then she destroyed Anirul and promised to return them to a righteous path.[7]
