Duke Leto Atreides was the ruler of the House Atreides during the First Spice War.
Biography[]
Atreides playthrough[]
Duke Leto Atreides and the House Atreides were invited to participate in the First Spice War by Padishah Emperor Frederick IV. The Atreides, Harkonnen and Ordos would battle on Arrakis and the victor would be granted the lucrative Spice Melange mining rights. Leto's chief strategy was to ally himself with the natives of Arrakis, the Fremen. The Commander was one of many individuals conscripted to fight for the Atreides on Arrakis. They, along with the other soliders, were ordered to construct a Spice Refinery in the Imperial Basin and defend it from Harkonnen soldiers.
After Mentat Noree Moneo discovered that The Commander arrived on Arrakis with the Corrino Lady Elara Moray Trieu, he informed Duke Leto. Leto decided that The Commander should be given one chance to prove their loyalty and carry out a mission for them. The Commander was ordered to overtake a mining camp in the Imperial Basin by Moneo. Moneo reminded them that the Duke would be watching.
After his victory, Leto personally requested that The Commander lead a mission to Tuono basin to mine spice and defend themselves.
Later, Atreides forces discovered Fremen at Sietch Tabr, taking them as hostage. Leto decided to liberate them, to show the Fremen they meant no harm and potentially foster an alliance in the future. This strategy was ultimately succesful, as Kari and the Fremen joined with House Atreides and defeated the House Corrino, killing Frederick IV and securing Spice rights.
Harkonnen playthrough[]
Baron Harkonnen was the arch-enemy of Leto. He aimed to defeat him and take his Ducal ring for himself. Later in the war, The Commander successfully cut off Leto's hand and brought it to Mentat Hayt De Vries, who would give it to the Baron.
Description[]
Leto was 'noble, just, diplomatic, intelligent [and] duty-bound.'[1] He was fair skinned.
Behind the scenes[]
- Leto takes direct inspiration from Leto Atreides I from Frank Herbert's Dune, though it cannot be the same character as the sequel, Emperor: Battle for Dune, takes place centuries before Dune. Leto is described as 'Just' and his arch-enemy Baron Harkonnen vows to take the Ducal ring for himself (just as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen wishes in the book).
