Gurney Halleck was the warmaster of House Atreides.

Background[]
Gurney Halleck was once held in the slave pits on Giedi Prime, for which he developed a deep hatred for House Harkonnen.[1] He later became the warmaster of House Atreides and trained Ariste Atreides, the daughter of Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, in combat.[2] The Atreides' Suk Doctor, Wellington Yueh, betrayed them to the Harkonnens, which Jessica discovered with her abilities as a Truthsayer, allowing the Atreides to prepare for the Harkonnens' attack and survive the Battle of Arrakeen. The two houses later became engaged in a War of Assassins.[1]
Awakening[]
Intent on putting a stop to the Bene Gesserit's planned betrothal of Ariste and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Hallack arranged for an Ixian frigate, the Hephaestus, to crashland on Arrakis. He then had a distress signal sent out indicating that Ariste was onboard in order to lure Feyd in. Once Feyd and the Prisoner reached the command bridge of the ship, Halleck comtacted them via a solido projector and revealed hip trap. He then triggered the explosives that he had attached to the ship's fuel chambers. However, the sandstorm raging outside the ship interfered with the detonator's signal and allowed Feyd and the Prisoner enough time to escape.[1]
