Dune: Ornithopter Assault cover for Europe

Frank Herbert's Dune: Ornithopter Assault is a cancelled combat flight simulation game for Game Boy Advance. It was developed by Soft Brigade and prepared to be released by Cryo Interactive for Europe in September 2002.

The player would become Duncan Idaho piloting an ornithopter and helping Paul Atreides with Fremen in their resistance. Gameplay involves over twenty missions of fighting, escorting, defending, capturing enemy vehicles and looking for spice and water. Multiplayer, co-op and deathmatch, would also be possible if two consoles were cable connected.

A small team of developers based in Budapest had to put the whole voxel engine game into a 4 MB cartridge. The development stopped in summer 2002 when all missions were already playable and only multiplayer was missing. Cryo Interactive went bankrupt and the publisher DreamCatcher for North America did not want to renew the licence for another year.

An unfinished version leaked in 2015. An official release was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in November 2021. The game had to be renamed to Elland: The Crystal Wars and get ridden of the Dune license, Arrakis was replaced by Elland, spice by minerals and crystals. PC port was released on October 4, 2022.
