The First House of Corrin Corrino[1] was the third branch of the imperial House Corrino to hold the Golden Lion Throne, founded by Corrin IV in 1701 AG. Corrin IV was a distant descendant of Emperor Corrin II (r. 477–482), of the House of Alman Corrino.
The Imperial House was until its extinction in 2191 dominated by the economically powerful House Atreides. The period of their rule is also known as the "Era of the Princes".
History[]
The imperial line preceding the First House of Corrin Corrino, the House of Alman Corrino, went extinct in 1604 AG.[2] A succession crisis threatened to plunge the Imperium into civil war, though a regency under the Landsraad was soon set up. Through the machinations of Iraklii Harkonnen, the regency collapsed in 1680, leading to an interregnum until 1701 when the only government on an Imperium-wide basis was a loosely organized committee of Great Houses.[2] The interregnum period of 1680–1701 was politically tumultuous, with several small revolts and small-scale civil wars.[2]
In 1701, Iraklii Harkonnen rooted out Corrin bin Alman bin Henoor,[2] a distant[2] descendant of Corrin II (r. 477–482) of the House of Alman Corrino.[1] Corrin was proclaimed Emperor Corrin IV, and the Harkonnens were elevated to a House Major as a reward.[2] Both House Harkonnen and House Atreides grew rich by exploiting the unrest in the interregnum period.[2][3] By the time of Corrin IV's accession in 1701, Count Achilleus Atreides was the richest man in the Imperium and he used his wealth to reduce the power of the emperor. This began to so-called "Era of the Princes".[3]
During this period, the Atreides economic ascendency allowed them unprecedented influence over imperial policy. Achilleus's grandsons Phillipos III Atreides and Markos Atreides forced a rapid turnover of emperors, seeking to prevent any one dynast from achieving too much power.[3] Emperor Sidir XIII (r. 2188–2191)[1] sought to end the influence of the Atreides and had Count Maximos Atreides killed during an audience. Maximos's son, Peleus Atreides, avenged his father by having Sidir poisoned in his own bed less than two months later.[3]
Sidir's death ended the First House of Corrin Corrino.[1] The Landsraad refused to recognize any imperial claimants for six years, until Peleus signed a truce with the distantly related Corrino dynast Baron Shahrukh Kenric,[3] who became emperor in 2197 (founding the House of Shahrukh Corrino).[1]
