Sister Emeline was a zealous acolyte descended from a long line of martyrs, who carried fervent religion to her training at the Sisterhood.[1]

Biography[]

Emeline was on Wallach IX, training to be a Truthsayer with the Sisterhood. During one exercise, they examined a brain and had to decide who the man was. Theodosia and Emeline said he must have been a criminal or sociopath, while Jen correctly said he was a survivor. Tula used it to teach them a lesson about the small signs they were learning to detect as Truthsayers.

Another exercise involved them talking to prisoners and determining if they were telling the truth or lying. Emeline listened to hers and said she was lying.[2]

As word spread that Kasha had died, Emeline talked about it with the other acolytes and said that all the founding Sisters were willing to die to follow Raquella's footsteps, though Theodosia believed she was assassinated and suggested they all watch their backs.

Lila later came to Emeline when she was considering taking poison to access her other memory to talk to Raquella, asking if she meant what she said about sacrificing herself to be a martyr. Emeline told her that after the war, her family was on the ground in the Battle of Corrin and knew they wouldn't survive, so they created enough distraction to buy time for the fleets to come in. She felt that being a martyr was honorable.

Emeline later watched as Lila went through with the Agony. They watched as she access Raquella and then Dorotea, but then slumped to the table and became unresponsive.[3]

When Lila remained unresponsive, Avila brought the acolytes in to see her. She told them that sacrifices were required for the mission of the Sisterhood and Lila was one of many of those. Emeline was at her peace with Lila's death as her wisdom lived on. The acolytes then took turns saying goodbye to her.[4]

That night, Emeline had a nightmare and left her bed while sleeping. Jen found her just before she used a blade to slit her own throat. Since all the other acolytes, except Jen, were having nightmares, they reported what had happened to Tula. When Emeline started using Truthsense on Tula, Jen snapped her out of it and they went back to their studies. Tula later called all the acolytes into a room and had all of them except Jen take spice and then draw what they'd seen in their nightmares. This started with different drawings for each of them, but then ended up with them all drawing the same things. They didn't snap out of it when Tula called for them to wake up, but a few minutes later, they broke out of it on their own. Emeline looked at her drawing and said God was watching them and judging them and the reckoning was there.

Emeline then began reviewing old texts.[5]

Emeline and the other acolytes were training in redistributing heat energy when Jen confronted Avila, who was teaching them, and asked what protection they had when nightmares were plaguing them.[6]

After reviewing old texts, Emeline gathered her sisters and told them they needed to band together. They were shocked when Lila walked in, interrupting their meeting. After some time, they realized it wasn't Lila, but her grandmother, Dorotea. Emeline said she'd been reading about all the Sisters she asked to speak to. They were the Butlerian sisters and disbanded after Dorotea's suicide and Emeline was working to revive their tradition. Dorotea told her it wasn't suicide and that Valya had erased all the sisters who were loyal to Dorotea. Valya had lied to them about the history of the school. She led them to the mass grave that held the skeletons of those sisters, murdered by Valya. Dorotea then promised to return them to the righteous path. To do this, she led them to the storeroom, where she destroy Anirul.[7]
