Elrood

Elrood, by Dev Pramanik and Alex Guimarães, House Atreides Graphic novel

Elrood IX (d. 10156 AG) was the son of Fredhrick XIX and the brother of Emperor Corrin XXV and Cirni Fenring. He was the father of Prince Shaddam with Fasrille.

When his brother died, he succeeded him. Elrood negotiated with the Bene Gesserit (who offered impressive inducements) of accepting arranged marriages to Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank.

He also rewarded Pardot Kynes by assigning him as Imperial Planetologist to Arrakis.

Elrood was intrigued by the Gamont background of Anuril Corrino, his son's concubine, and apparently insisted on tests and refresher lessons. However, as her friendship with Shaddam grew, so did her hatred for Elrood. In 10155 AG, Shaddam took Anuril as his wife, primarily to protect her from his father's growing obsession.

In 10155 AG, the household spies of the Heir Apparent, Prince Shaddam, including Hasimir Fenring, ferreted out an assassination plot against him. Young Shaddam read the report, which included a full description of the weapon of choice, to his father before the full Imperial Court. In the glare of such publicity, Elrood exercised the only option available to him: he arranged for the torture, confession, and execution of one of the more peripheral family members, on whom the entire affair was blamed. The revealed plot led to the widespread adoption of the hunter-seeker. There was also a theory that the man responsible for the thwarted assassination attempt was Elrood himself (which resulted in his own death to chaumurky less than a year later).

Elrood was succeeded by his son, Shaddam IV. It was widely believed that Shaddam was responsible for this poisoning, although he was not, of course, the immediate agent involved. Seven Imperial servants were executed as a result of the death.
