Is it me, or does anybody else notice that frank herbert seemed to shy away from overtly magical/psychic abilities (though there are some questionable activities that seemingly could only occur through psychic/magical activities: face dancer mental imprinting of their vicitims being one), and yet Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson seem to embrace it (the sorceresses of rossak)? anyhow, i just wanted to start a discussion about whether or not we are talking about magic/telepathy/psychics or prescience. what did herbert believe? personally, i always got the impression that he was trying to say that humans, given the proper breeding/training could achieve amazing feats of computation, which to commoners would seem like magic (prescience) as opposed to outright magical/mystical abilities (psychics). is there are page on this somewhere?

He didn't necessarily shy away from it, but they weren't common place either. Telepathy is briefly mentioned in Dune and is also in the Terminology part of Dune as well. The thing about most of the abilities, while they may seem magical, have a completely rational basis, which was part of the mystic of the Bene Gesserit and their power. As you said, while certain factions knew how their abilities worked, they weren't necessarily sure how others did, i.e. The Guild knew nothing of Bene Gesserit training and vice versa. Most people didn't even know how Sardaukar were trained. This made them seem far more terrifying or powerful to the majority of the citizens of the Landsraad, assured a certain sense of security through fear.

As far as psychic abilities, they obviously had them and Herbet had little qualms with giving characters abilities that could be defined as psychic, though he never chose to use that term. Instead, he chose to explain these abilities in a rational way that made them somewhat scientifically plausable, contrary to Sorceresses of Rossak, which were a bit more of a stretch, though it was explained that they were the result of a rare mutation caused by the mutagenic effect of the Rossak environment. However, the genetic probability of a mutation of that kind in a small scale community was pretty slim, and the manner of their abilities wasn't consistent to the way Frank Herbet seemed to be heading.
