- "Derek Chinara, planetologist, botanist...political exile, I'm afraid. I've been stuck out here for a while. I learned the hard way - never say the wrong thing to someone from Kaitain."
- ―Derek Chinara to the Prisoner[src]
Derek Chinara was a planetary ecologist.
Biography[]
Background[]
Derek Chinara was born on Kaitain. He studied to be an ecologist in college and idolised the planetologist Pardot Kynes. He got on the wrong side of Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV's great nephew, Cyprian Io. He received a letter from Pardot's child, Liet-Kynes, requesting his help with a terraforming project. He agreed and travelled to Arrakeen, though Liet was lost in battle before he arrived and Chinara was forced to work with the new planetologist, Io, whom he despised and considered unworthy of the position. He was given a groundcar and an ancient sinkchart of the old botanical testing stations and tasked with documenting their operational status. He inspected two of the stations but was unable to continue due to constant attacks by bandits infected with an unknown ailment.[1]
Awakening[]
Chinara was approached by the Prisoner at his camp in Hagga Basin. He told them of his past and the difficulties he had faced on Arrakis. He offered to teach them planetary ecology if they recovered a manifest containing a foll log of supplies from one of the testing stations.[1]
