"I told you before, mother, I won't be home for dinner tonight or any time soon. We're on double shift until further notice. Oh' don't give me that look. You know I have no say on the matter...and they are cracking down on anyone who gives even the slightest trouble. Ufim's cousin disappeared. They say he was an agitator, but no one can say what he did."
―Dayvan[src]

Dayvan was a character in Five Days at Carthag.

Biography[]

Awakening[]

Dayvan was called for breakfast by his mother, who informed him that there was only tea to drink, as she was saving what little bread they had for dinner. He reminded her that he would not be home for dinner that night or any time soon, as he was on double shift until further notice. He told her that he had no choice, for the Harkonnens were cracking down hard and his friend Ufim's cousin had disappeared. His mother was angry, but he warned her to keep quiet, for the Harkonnens were listening. He then convinced her to say the traditional words of praise of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, despite her reluctance.

He then told her that Zantara was to blame for the increased workload, as he had destroyed the last phased ion refinery in the Northern Precinct. He cursed the Fremen, for which she chastised him, as his paternal grandmother had been a Fremen. He replied that he was glad that the Fremen had been wiped out, believing them to have practices cannibalism, but she told them these were lies by the Imperium and the Fremen only extracted water from the dead. He informed her that due to Zantara's actions they would be testing a long throw cutteray auger with an ungraded barrel, which could easily be dangerous. She forbade him to get involved, but he insisted that he must and she warned him to be careful, fearing that something bad was about to take place.

As the pyons prepared to fire the cutteray, Ufin warned Dayvan how risky the exercise was. Dayvan agreed, but pointed out that they had direct orders from Piter de Vries. Once everything was set up, they activated the cutteray, only for it to go out of phase, vaporize the beam splitter and empty the charge onto Areg, killing him. The rest of the pyons were ordered to continue their shifts. Returning home later, Dayvan informed his mother of what happened. Hearing a commotion outside, Dayvan went out and asked Droba what was happening. Droba informed him that Glossu Rabban had announced a festival with music food and gladiator matches, in which the famed Argus Veer would fight for the first time in seven years. Excited, Dayvan informed his mother, who shamed him for forgetting the death of his friend. Davyan felt sorry, knowing that Areg would have loved to see Argus Veer.[1]
