- "My people owe you a massive water debt. We will provide you with as many of our troops as you require."
- ―Corlen to Duke Achillus Atreides, Kolinar Koltrass and The Commander[src]
Corlen was the resourceful, tough and dedicated leader of a Fremen Sietch during the time of the Battle for Dune. Corlen was gruff, stubborn andinitially wary of the House Atreides.[1] After the Atreides saved them from a Harkonnen attack and returned the Fremen corpses to the tribe, they gained Corlen's respect. He was nominated as the representative of all Fremen tribes on Arrakis and visited Caladan to negotiate with the Duke Achillus Atreides, forming an alliance with the Atreides to ward off the Harkonnen, Ordos and Corrino invaders.
Biography[]
Amtal challenge[]
Corlen became the leader of a Sietch on Arrakis. During the Battle for Dune, Corlen refused to align with any of the 3 Houses: The Atreides, The Harkonnen and The Ordos. Corlen went as far as to directly reject an offer of alliance between the Fremen and Atreides. Geisel protested his stance, knowing it would be impossible for the Fremen alone to fight the offworld invaders. Corlen reminded him that he was the leader of the Sietch and Geisei told him he had ruled for too long, invoking the Fremen duel rite of Amtal. Corlen managed to talk Geisei down but conceded that he was right, believing that they would eventually have to accept the alliance.
Recovering the dead[]
Corlen's patrol was later ambushed by Harkonnen troopers and planned to hold a final stand. Atreides Ornithopters came to their rescue and launched explosives, allowing the patrol an opening to launch an attack. After escaping, Corlen confronted the Atreides Mentat Kolinar Koltrass, outraged that the Atreides had taken the bodies of their fallen brothers; In Fremen culture, that water belonged to the tribe. Koltrass informed him that they had wrapped the bodies in Micropore to conserve the water and told him that the Atreides would return them whenever they wished. Corlen spat on the floor, a sign of respect, and left.
Potential alliance[]
When the Harkonnens began stepping up attacks on the Fremen, Corlen tracked down Koltrass near a Spice harvester. Appointed as the representative of all Fremen tribes on Arrakis, he asked for a meeting with the Duke Achilleus Atreides to discuss a potential alliance. Koltrass asked Corlen to visit Caladan, the homeworld of House Atreides to discuss the alliance with the Duke in person. Corlen was initially hesitant, but the Mentat reassured him and he accepted, departing immediately.
On Caladan[]
Kolinar Koltrass arrived on Caladan ahead of Corlen to inform The Commander of Fremen customs, specifically the Crysknife. Duke Achillus and his Honor Guard greeted Corlen upon arrival at the starport. Their meeting was cut short, however, when the Duke's Honor Guard revealed themselves to be disguised Tleilaxu Face Dancers who had murdered the guards and taken their place. Achillus called Koltrass to inform him but their broadcast was cut short, ambushed by more Face Dancers. Koltrass ordered The Commander to lead a battle and save the Duke and Corlen, who were completely cut off from the Castle Caladan. The Commander was succesful and the Duke and Corlen arrived at the castle. Corlen told them that the Fremen owed the Atreides a water debt, and would provide them with as many Fremen warriors as was required. Koltrass inquired as to whether they would supply any Fedaykin, elite Fremen fighters and Corlen obliged. Duke Achillus and Corlen left the room together.
