Chani Kynes is a member of the Fremen tribes of Arrakis and becomes close with Paul Atreides. Chani is portrayed by Zendaya.
Description[]
Chani was born on Dune, raised in the ways of its free people the Fremen, and shaped by its wilds to be a confident and dangerous warrior. A relentless defender of the people she loves, she will rise defiant against any outsider seeking to endanger the natural beauty of her world.[1]
History[]
Paul's visions[]
Chani is absent for most of the Atreides' move to Arrakis, appearing only in visions Paul has when he dreams. She does, however, narrate the most of the story, explaining the Harkonnen's rule over Arrakis and their sudden departure, which leads the way for the upcoming massacre of House Atreides.
After the majority of House Atreides is assassinated, Chani appears as a member of the Fremen tribe under Stilgar when Jessica and Paul escape into the desert. She welcomes Paul into their tribe, but seems blissfully unaware that the two share a connection.
Quotes[]
"My planet Arrakis is so beautiful when the sun is low. Rolling over the sands. You can see spice in the air. At nightfall, the spice harvesters land. The outsiders race against time to avoid the heat of the day. They ravage our land in front of our eyes. Their cruelty to my people is all I've known. These outsiders, the Harkonnens, came long before I was born. By controlling spice production, they became obscenely rich. Richer than the Emperor himself. Our warriors couldn't free Arrakis from the Harkonnens. But one day, by Imperial decree, they were gone. Why did the Emperor choose this path? And who will our next oppressors be?" - Opening narration
"They say you're the Mahdi. But you look like a little boy." - To Paul
"I don't believe you're the Lisan al-Gaib. But I want you to die with honor. This crysknife was given to me by my great-aunt. Its made from a tooth of Shai Hulud, the great sandworm. This will be a great honor for you to die holding it. Jamis is a good fighter. He won't let you suffer."
“This prophecy is how they enslave us!” - To her fellow Fremen, Dune: Part Two
Trivia[]
- Liet is Chani's father and Stilgar's brother in the book, and this is the first adaptation to depict the character as female. No direct relation is mentioned in the 2021 film or its sequel.
