Atreides soliders with the head of the Salusan bull that killed the Old Duke

"Sometimes the bull gores the matador, Dar."
Bellonda[src]

The Bull was a large, horned,[1][2] furry animal. Its fur had a shine.[3]

Matadors[4] or Bullfighters[2] fought bulls for sport, wearing flamboyant costumes, in rings with rows of spectators.[5]

The old Duke of House Atreides was a bullfighter and ultimately died in the ring, impaled by a Bull's horns.[6] The head of the bull that killed him was kept as a decoration in Castle Caladan and later in the imperial residence of House Atreides on Arrakis. The bull head had the Duke's blood laminated on it.[1]

  2. 2.0 2.1 God Emperor of Dune - Chapter 37: He thought of the coming encounter much as an ancient bullfighter had thought about the first examination of a horned adversary.
  3. Dune - Chapter 7: A piece of the twine was still clutched in Jessica's left hand. Beside the painting lay a black bull's head mounted on a polished board. The head was a dark island in a sea of wadded paper. Its plaque lay flat on the floor, and the bull's shiny muzzle pointed at the ceiling as though the beast were ready to bellow a challenge into this echoing room.

  5. Dune - Chapter 17: He was reminded of the bull ring and of the Duke's father (who'd been brave, no matter what his other failings) and one day of the corrida long ago: The fierce black beast had stood there, head bowed, immobilized and confused. The Old Duke had turned his back on the horns, cape thrown flamboyantly over one arm, while cheers rained down from the stands.
  6. Chapterhouse: Dune - Chapter 20: Die on the horns of a great bull as Muad’Dib’s grandfather did.
