Beric was a Guild Navigator steersman who helped facilitate the rebellion of Earl Memnon Thorvald in 10198 AG during the reign of Emperor Paul Atreides.
Once Paul determined during a deep spice trance that Thorvald and his allies were planning to attack Caladan, Paul summoned Guild representatives, who allowed Olar to negotiate for Paul to speak to Beric is his clearplaz chamber. Beric neither denied nor confirmed that he knew the insurrection was going to occur, but Paul demanded his enemies be eliminated.
Paul demanded that Beric himself take Thorvald and his cargo hold full of allies out into deep space, and abandon them far away from all civilized planets with little or no resources -- which Beric and the Guild did. Paul still demanded that the Guild transport House Atreides heavy bomber spacecraft to Thorvald's home planet of Ipyr, which was used to and kill and sterilize all life on the lush, populated world.
After Beric and the Guild did as Paul wished, their allotment of melange was increased.
