- "We are the gateway to the stars. While our use of Holtzman technology is not exclusive, our Navigators' ability to see paths through foldspace and safely navigate the void is. To put it simply, the Spacing Guild binds and connects the Imperium and the universe. Words fail to convey the immensity."
- ―Barden to the Prisoner[src]
Barden was a representative of the Spacing Guild.
Biography[]
Awakening[]
Barden was approached by the Prisoner in Arrakeen. They asked him about the role of the Spacing Guild and he explained how the Guild Navigators used the Holtzman Effect to foldspace. They asked him if he had ever met a Navigator and he replied that he worked in the Accounting department and tried to avoid Navigators and Steersmen as much as possible. He compared the sensation of being in the presence of one to having maggots writhing around inside one's skull. He expressed a disinterest in the politics of Arrakeen, viewing the city as being beneath him.[1]
