Behind the Scenes[]

Biography[]

While Avila was training on Wallach IX, there was a conflict after Raquella's death because some remained loyal to Dorotea, whom they believed killed herself after Raquella's death, and others who followed Valya. Valya and some of those loyal to her came to those loyal to Dorotea, including Avila, and ordered them to follow Valya or kill themselves as Dorotea had. When they were finished, only Avila remained and she agreed to cover up what had happened there.[1]

Avila came to Valya to review the day's requests from the Great Houses. Valya told her which requests to grant and which to deny.[2]

Avila talked to Tula about the decision to put Lila through the Agony to get information. Tula was resistant, but knew it was Valya's order, so she went through it. They watched as Raquella spoke through Lila and then collapsed, limp and unresponsive.[3]

With Lila unchanged, Avila told her she couldn't keep her alive any longer. She brought the other acolytes to see her and emphasized how sacrifices were necessary in service to the mission. Then they all said goodbye. Avila later told Tula that Valya would be proud of her.[4]

When all the acolytes except Jen had the same dream that made them cry out in their sleep, Jen and Emeline reported it to Tula. When Avila came in and heard this, she suggested they return to their studies. She suggested that Tula leave it alone so it could leave their minds. Avila was shocked when Tula ignored her request and instead had the acolytes take spice and draw what they saw in their dreams, which all converged into the same drawings. They realized the dreams caused such a terror that the terror woke them up, not Tula. She worried it could be a sing of what's to come. Avila said they needed to tell the acolytes before it consumed them, but Tula reminded her that that could cause hysteria.[5]

Avila was training the acolytes in moving heat energy when Jen spoke up and wondered how that was important when they were plagued by nightmares. Avila told her she was out of line and then Tula interjected and had Jen step out with her.

Avila later went to the storeroom to talk to Tula and was shocked when Lila stepped out of the room. She questioned Tula about it and asked if Valya knew, but Tula just said she was doing what she told to do and dismissed her, telling her not to tell anyone else what she'd seen.[6]

When Dorotea returned, using Lila's body, she told everyone the truth of her death, that it was Valya's doing, and with both Valya and Tula gone, Avila gave Dorotea the tool she used access the storeroom and destroy Anirul and with it, the breeding index.[1]
