Avelard IX was the brother of Duke Saurophon Atreides and Sidir XVIII, and probably the son of Empress Alia VII.
He succeeded his brother to the Golden Lion Throne. Nestor IV Atreides, Saurophon's son, wished to usurp his uncle. This was discovered and the Emperor stripped him of his titles (It is unclear whether this was Avelard or his predecessor Sidir.) Nestor made a second attempt to usurp his uncle, and Avelard executed him in 7553 AG. This established a lasting rivalry between the Imperial Corrinos and the Atreides Dukes.
Inconsistencies[]
The Dune Encyclopedia reports Avelard IX's reign as ending in 7551 AG but reports him executing his nephew two years later in 7553 AG.
