House Atreides crest (Dune, 2021)
The Imperium[1][2] (10196–13724 AG), specified as the Atreides Imperium[3][4][5] to distinguish it from the preceding Corrino Imperium, was the imperial government established by Paul Muad'Dib Atreides after the overthrow of House Corrino in the aftermath of the Arrakis Revolt.
Paul Muad'Dib's rise to power was the greatest change the Imperium had endured throughout its history.[6] Muad'Dib's Jihad (10196-10208 AG), brought an end to the tensions and balances between the Imperial House and the Landsraad that had characterized the old Imperium. In their stead, power was concentrated solely in the hands of Emperor Paul Muad'Dib.[7] The level of power concentrated in the emperor's hands were unlike anything seen in House Corrino's history. Furthermore, the imperial capital became firmly fixed on Arrakis, with a solidity never experienced by the Corrino capital of Kaitain.[6] The classic period of imperial feudalism came to an end, though forms of it endured for many generations.[8]
Name[]
In addition to the "Imperium" and "Atreides Imperium", the Imperium has also been called the Pauline Imperium,[9] Fremen Empire,[10] Muad'Dib's Imperium,[6] Atreidean empire,[11][12] Second Empire,[13] or simply the Empire.[14] The empire as it was under Leto II's long reign is sometimes called Leto's empire.[15]
