Today, I made it through the Kralizec and finished the last book of the great Dune saga, Sandworms of Dune.

After rereading the 6 original books, I decided to travel back in time and first read the Prelude, Legends and Schools of Dune trilogies.

I always found the ending of Chapterhouse a bit unsatisfying, not a real closure. With the 2 sequels Hunters and Sandworms of Dune at least the story continued and the whole saga of Dune comes more to a closure. Maybe not the strongest but at least without open ends.

I would also recommend to read the Legends and maybe the Schools of Dune trilogies before the 2 final books. According to my opinion it provides you the necessary insight on the history of the enemy(ies) and various factions involved.

And now I finished it, will once again go back in time to dive into the Caladan trilogy.

I’m about to finish the book Paul of Dune. It was after a comment from @Joanna Nanette (in some previous post) that i decided to go for this book after completing the Legends of dune and Prelude to dune trilogies.

Sofar, i find it a good book which contains several time periods in the life of Paul. The assassin wars in the young years of Paul were intriguing and fun to read.

I also found the period that covers the time between the dune and messiah books an addition to the whole story, as it shows a bit more about Paul’s struggle in becoming a tyrant. It also contains a massive assassin attempt which could certainly be added in the next movie.

Something id like to know since I didnt read the books or gotten into any of the expander material yet but do any of the creatures(non human) of duneverse actually talk in english or basically a language the human characters understand, basically do any of them actually become characters and not typical animals?

All I know about is the one creature from dune messiah and sandworm hybrid leto.

What's going on? While I was on vacation I decided to read more of heretics of dune, and can I just say, Sheeana is the best. IYKYK

If humanity wasn’t united under the corrino empire but still adhered too the feudal system. Or after the fall of the Corrinos, Paul’s jihad never took place and the great houses were left to themselves.

What do you reckon human civilisation would look like.

I picture a post western Roman Empire collapse scenario where a “Petty kingdom” scene would unfold, with all the houses from great to minor would seek to carve out there territories and such

I don't just mean the ones that Frank Herbert wrote, but also the ones written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. I have finished the first book and am half way through Dune: Messiah, but I have bought the rest of Frank's books and have all of Brian and Kevin's books on my Amazon shopping list.

Has anyone here read all of the books? If so, how long did it take you to get through them all?

Reading Leto II’s page, and it says he always uses Duncan Idaho gholas to run his military/militia…and that sometimes Leto lets Duncan die a natural death, Leto has Duncan murdered, or Duncan attempts to murder Leto?

Just wondering is someone can shed some light on why Leto chooses this cycle?

What I am about to say is just meant for creative discussion not to outrage people cause I am offering criticism its just my opinion, if you are a big fan of dune and you cant handle a disliking opinion I recommend you just skip this post. But having not read the book and just seen the movies I am confused on what makes dune so greater than other sci fi stories. I got a very very generic feeling from it like been there done that. And as for sci fi part of it, I didnt really get much of that vibe from the movies either. The whole point of the story feels more akin to like game of thrones or something of just different groups battling for power and the sci fi stuff feels minor. But I wanna give the benefit of the doubt and say there is something in the book that really defines why so many people say is the greatest that just hasnt been adapted into the movies yet. I have no problem being spoiled about the dune book fyi I dont plan on reading it ever, Im just trying to get the why its considered the greatest cause I think I fell for the hype and I overall came out mostly dissapointed.

Hi! After watching the "Dune" movie, I felt the story had more potential, which led me to start reading "Dune." I'm nearly finished with the second book (I chose to read "Paul of Dune" before "Messiah"), and I'm quite confident that I'll read all 22 books in the series. I'm curious, how many of you have read all 22 books?

This question pertains to just the original book and I am asking if there was plans that were meant to happen but something or someone intervened and changed it, like whether frank herbert made the change or someone else(like someone he answered to)

I don't actually like Dune (book 1) that much story-wise, but Messiah and Children slap HARD lol. God Emperor was uncomfortable, I disliked the moral subjectivity of it, finishing that one felt like a sigh of relief. I was sad because I really liked Leto II, I felt like he was making a sacrifice that Paul wasn't strong enough to make and he was succeeding where Paul succumbed to darkness. Mild spoilers- For the first half of God Emperor, I was trying so hard to root for Leto, telling myself that the other characters had him wrong, they didn't know everything he knew, but at a certain point, I just became absolutely disappointed and disgusted with him and it made it worse that Siona's rebellion wasn't exactly a moral group either. Duncan Idaho is my guy now- man was in a tough situation.

Also, what would people think of a reading order starting with Book 5 (Heretics) because it's kind of a self contained beginning, then reading 4, then 3, then 1 then 2 and finishing with 6? I feel like that reading order would feel much more tragic and it would make you not get attached to any one character (the amount of times I've explained to people who are fans of the films that the series has no consistent main character lol).

Just curious to those who read the first book is there any major parts left out in the movie adaptations? Like as someone who just read certain parts from people who claim to read the book I know two certain things to where I can see why they weren't added if these are true

One is apparently Paul and his mom have a romantic relationship in the book

The 2nd being apparently baron has a thing for young boys which they did adapt that in the 1984 version but didn't really touch on that in the recent version other than he kissed feyd on the mouth which honestly I think is more of family affection than romance but that's how I interpret it.

Anything else I am missing?

Kind of mixed, Frank Herbert could definitely build tension when he wanted to, but never did for anyone's deaths.

Duncan Idahos death is literally just casually mentioned as Paul and Jessica make there escapes, so that was REALLY irritating.

Most action scenes were disappointing too, I was excited to imagine them on my own, but that's not to say any of the smaller points were bad, the banquet scene in particular is one of my favorites.

I also understand Feyd wasn't meant to be the primary antagonist, but I think like the film that is just the superior writing decision as him and Pauls eventual clash could've been built up to and not so casual.

Also people made it seem like Alia was super trippy and hard to imagine, but the quality of the writing made it pretty easy.

I need some help here. I’m reading God Emperor of Dune right now and I’m almost done (whoop whoop!). Leto is freaking out about Malky returning. I know that he is Hwi’s uncle and that he’s from Ix and that he helped retrieve Hwi and everything, but I’m confused as to why Leto is so afraid of him returning? Maybe I missed something at the beginning of the book idk… someone explain.
